  • The post process for a film project can vary widely dependent on scope, genre, style, and the director’s specific needs & goals. Generally speaking though, once your film is picture locked, we’ll go through the turnover process, in which your picture edit team prepares a timeline for me and my team to work with. Depending on how organized and efficiently turnover goes, the film will then get onboarded into our system, and then edited. Sound editing is the process of creating a timeline full of all the sounds that will make up the final mix.

You can think of editing it almost like shopping before you go to cook dinner. Editing is going to the grocery store, stocking the pantry, gathering every ingredient we might need big or small. The edit process can involve generating new sounds like recording original foley or loop material, pulling from libraries, scouring production sound recordings, usually all of the above. The edit process tends to take a lot of time and involve tedious tasks that aren’t benefited by the director being present.

The mix, on the contrary, is like the cooking phase of preparing a meal. We’ve got all our ingredients diligently organized, and now we’ll take decisive actions in real time to combine them to create a pleasing result. This tends to be the point where having the director and key stakeholders in the room is invaluable, as we use tools that allow us to manipulate the mix in real time with picture.

Editing and mixing can also happen in multiple cycles as needed. How long this takes is dependent on budget and schedule.

  • Short answer: Whatever you need!

Long answer: Stereo and 5.1 deliverables are included in any mix, higher end deliverables (ATMOS) can be arranged but must be budgeted for before beginning work!

  • A whole bunch.
